NATURAL DYE IKAT <<>> KIMONOS AND BAGS

We are so thrilled to launch The Altiplano natural dye collection featuring beautiful handwoven kimonos and bags! Working with Mayan women in the highlands of Guatemala using their centuries old traditions of dying and weaving; these pieces are colored using all natural dyes derived from local plants and minerals, like indigo, turmeric, rosemary, purple basil and chimney ash. The unique textiles pattern is created by using a traditional technique of tying and dying the threads called ikat or jaspe and weaving the fabric on a back strap loom. This project works with our artisan partner’s deep knowledge of the indigenous plants and their uses. The women have learned how dying during the full and new moons can effect the intensity of the colors as well as the effects of when the plants are harvested. Their experience produces a full range of color and impressive consistency.

We are so proud of the project and the product. While the techniques used to create our beautiful Kimono’s are ancient, their aesthetic is fresh and modern. The cotton/ rayon blend has a beautiful hand and drape, and the fiber showcases the rich natural colors. The indigo series braided handle bag is equally sturdy and beautiful and showcases graphic indigo ikat.

This sustainable project is not only good for the environment, but helps maintain cultural identity through traditional craft. Like the rest of the world, Guatemalan Mayans are moving away from some of their traditional, time intensive dying and weaving techniques as they navigate the modern world. This type of slow fashion and sustainable design is a cornerstone of fair trade and the heart of Altiplano.
